Fall Surf in Maine

Well, there's frost on the pumpkin and fire in the woodstove! The swells have been showing up nearly every weekend. Last weekend (October 16th, 17th and 18th) were fun, even IF it snowed Sunday afternoon while we surfed Old Orchard beach. Brrrr.  This past weekend was a wee bit warmer, and we were expecting gale winds to accompany the rain. Lucky for us it was better than expected! It still rained, but the wind was mild and the surf was nice. Sunday was gangbusters! Everybody I've spoken to said they had a great time. We even had nice chest to head leftovers on Monday when I went to Higgings to pass out fylers for the wetsuit sale (and get a few waves while I was there). Time to break out the winter suit? (They're on sale).  Okay, so many of us have worn our thicker suits, some of us have been toughing it out wearing our 3 mils. Is wearing an R3 Patagonia considered cheating? YUP! I saw someone out in the lineup at Higgins Monday morning with BARE head, hands and feet! AND a new guy came in today who told me he's still in his 3 mil, and he was thinking of getting gloves and booties! We make em tough up here!  Oh, and the water is 51 degrees. My mind is starting to wander...TO COSTA RICA! Or OZ, OR PERU, or NEW ZEALAND!!! OR... have you seen those photos of Lahinch Ireland on Magic Seaweed? Enough already! We're stuck here for a little while until we can no longer bear the snow and cold. Geez, the leaves are still on the trees! I'll just have to make do with my new patagonia R3 wettie, R4 gloves and my new Xcel 7 mil booties. Oh, and if you're riding a shortboard, make sure those booties are SNUG! I hate it when they fold over when I'm popping up!
